The Proposal

14 Nov

(rewind to Thursday night, approx. 7:00pm)

I was just having one of “those days.” I was tired and grouchy by the time I got home from work, and the only thing on my mind were my comfy pajamas and some food. Lucky for me, as soon as I changed into said jammies, I got a text from Jordan asking if I wanted sushi. My response, of course, was yes (please, ASAP). His offer wasn’t anything out of the ordinary- we get takeout sushi several times a month, and I had told him a few days before that I was craving it.

We knew it’d probably be busy, so he ordered the sushi from his house, and I waited out the 45 minutes at mine.

Around 8:00, he texted me to tell me that he forgot his wallet and had to go back home before he picked up the food. He’s not really the type to leave his wallet at home, but I figured he was just tired from working all day (he told told me later that his forgetfulness was due to nerves). So, I waited some more, wrote a blog post for Friday (which ended up being replaced with this), and anticipated the arrival of my sushi.

Fifteen or so minutes later, he arrived at my door, food in hand. I hurried him to the kitchen (I was starving, after all), and when I left the room for a minute, I came back to two plates that he’d set out- the food still in the containers. At that point, I think I was wondering why he hadn’t already plated our food. With a grumpy attitude (don’t judge, I was really hungry), I started opening the boxes to make sure that everything was there so I could start eating.

That’s when I noticed an extra Styrofoam box in the takeout bag. I figured Jordan had surprised me with a ginger salad, even though I didn’t ask for it. While I was tearing open the box and asking him if it was, in fact, a ginger salad, I turned back around to this:

There was so much more than a ginger salad in that box.

It was then that Jordan asked me to marry him. It look me about a minute to realize what was going on- and that I still hadn’t given him a response.

Once I realized that he wasn’t going to get up off of his knee until I did, I said “yes.” I said it in my fleece pajamas, no make-up, undone ponytail state- which is me in all my glory on a week night.

Thing thing is, it was just so “us.” We didn’t need a fancy dinner, big night out, or crowds of people watching us to make our plans to marry official. A big surprise in the comfort of my own kitchen was perfect.

Four days later, I’m still coming to terms with the fact that I’m a fiance.

My goal for today is to book the church and a reception venue so that we can officially set a date.

Let the wedding planning begin :)…

GAHHHHHH LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!! Congratulations again, Emily. I’m SO happy for you 😀

I like that your engagement story is nothing fancy. My dad proposed to my mom in his living room, and my roommate got engaged in her boyfriend’s living room, too. Super romantic Disney movie stories are cute, but it’s nice to see “normal” stories sometimes, too 🙂
