Feeling FitFluential

Normally, I’m an after work exerciser. I get up at 6:30, get to work around 9:00, leave work around 5:00, and get to the gym by 6:30- not to get back home again until 7:30 or 8:00. It makes for a long day. So last night, when I noticed that my 6:30pm spin class was already full, I decided to go with the flow (Me? Go with the flow? I know!) and sign up for the 5:15am class.

Even though I had to get up at 4:45am- an hour of day I haven’t seen since I don’t even know when– I got my 45 minute kick butt workout in before the sun came up. And I loved it. I left class feeling energized, and had one of the best days at work I’ve had in a long time. Usually I start feeling sluggish by…11am? But today, I just kept going. And on a Monday morning, too! I think I need to try the morning workout thing more often!

Besides the early morning workout that I’m feeling rather proud of (Jordan didn’t think I’d be able to get up that early…I showed him ;)), I have an even better reason to feel FitFluential today.

Last week, I applied to be a FitFluential Ambassador. After reading blog after blog from girls in the FitFluential Ambassador program, I thought that it was something I could do. Something that I really wanted to do. So, I wrote an essay, told them my story, and waited for feedback. And today’s email gave me all of the feedback I needed…

I am now a FitFluential Ambassador! I am so thankful, honored and excited to be a part of this program. A program that supports fitness enthusiasts of all levels, a program that encourages overall health and wellness, a program that emphasizes the importance of balance. If you’ve ever noticed the copious amounts of chocolate that I inhale consume, you know that I’m all about balance ;).

I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my week. Now, I must go end my day with ‘The Bachelor.’ It’s all about balance, I said :).

Preparing for Marriage

This morning, Jordan and I got up bright and early for our very first session of pre-marital counseling.

A few weeks ago, we both took an online questionnaire individually, and knew that it would be a big point of discussion in our initial meeting. We discussed our personality types, our communication styles, and other various aspects of our relationship. And I’m not gonna lie, the Communication Studies major in me was loving all of the communication talk.

The therapist analyzed a good portion of our questionnaires, but it was most encouraging to hear that we both have a realistic expectation of marriage. He said he was surprised to learn this since we’re fairly young and have never lived together. But…we’re both first-born, realistic, practical people, so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised!

We came home with a packet of communication strategies and some activities that we’re supposed to work through before we go back again. We still have one or two more sessions to go, and as cheesy as it sounds, I think it’s going to help was grow a lot closer. Already, we shared some things in that hour and a half meeting that we might have never known about each other otherwise. Who knew therapy would be so therapeutic ;)?

On a different note, it’s my dad’s birthday today, so I’m off to get some cardio in before we celebrate tonight! Have a happy weekend!

Survey Says…

I’m in a survey kind of mood today. It’s been a tiring week, and I feel like ending it on a random note. We can pretend we’re in 7th grade again- surveys consume all of our free time (or am I the only one that actually filled them out?). You know you love them ;)…

1. What is one of your favorite ways to spend a Saturday? Saturday night is my family’s “pizza night.” We get pizza and watch “House Hunters,” and just chill out on the couch. I like it. I wonder if Jordan and I will be invited when we’re married ;)?

I’ll just be blunt. I like getting my picture taken. If I said otherwise, my family would call me out ;).

Writing is my outlet. I’m not always the greatest at expressing myself in person, but when I have time to write my thoughts down, everything makes more sense. I love the blogging community too. Even though I haven’t met anyone in person, I love that I can relate to so many of you!

6. If you could have lunch with one person from your Twitter list, who would it be?

Oprah. I’ve been a talk show junkie for as long as can remember, and she is the queen of the business (not to mention all of her other accomplishments). It’s probably cliche, but I admire her.

8. Do you have a pet? If so, what kind?

Nope, no pets.

10. What is your favorite drink?

Green tea, and water. It’s basically all I drink…and I drink a ton of it!

11.Do you enjoy cooking?

Not.at.all. I already know this is going to cause problems when I’m married. Baking, on the other hand, I love! Think we can just eat baked goods every night for dinner ;)?

12. Do you have children?

I love kids, but no. Hopefully I will someday, but we plan to wait quite a few years for that.

14. Favorite hobbies?

Working out, blogging and baking.

15. Would you consider yourself shy or outgoing?

It depends on the situation. I’m quiet around new people, but once I’m comfortable, I’ll warm up.

16. Who is your favorite actor/actress?

Hmm…I don’t really have favorites, but if I had to pick I would say: Actor- Ashton Kutcher or Ryan Gosling, and Actress: Kaley Cuoco or Katherine Heigl.

17. What’s the coolest thing you’ve done this week?

I got my haircut tonight, and my stylist and I started talking about my wedding, so she decided to try a hairdo for the wedding! It was just a very quick trial run , but now I’m excited to go look for more ideas on Pinterest!

18. Do you live near or far from your parents?

I think I live about as close to my parents as I could get ;). That will change in July, of course, but we’re looking at places in the same area.

19. List three of your talents:

I can write.

– I’m ambidextrous. I write and eat left-handed, play sports right-handed, and can do most other everyday things with either hand.

– I have rhythm. That sounds silly. What I mean is, I danced for over 15 years, and sang in choir for many years.

Can you spot me? This was a song and dance number for my final choir performance in college.

20. What is your greatest attribute?

I’m very determined. When I know what I want, I work hard to accomplish it!

The Day (or two) After Strength Training

Is it normal to…(?)

Hobble around like an 80-year-old grandma.

Drink water like it’s my job.

Feel like a bottomless pit.

Wonder, “Does childbirth hurt worse than this?”

Swear off burpees. And planks. Forever.

Dread putting on skinny jeans, knowing that they’ll squeeze my already sore legs.

Feel attempted to take a sick day, because “my whole body hurts.”

Remember how I said I took a tough strength training class on Tuesday? I should’ve put more emphasis on the tough part. This is the first time, in a long time, that my body has hurt (so much.).

I had to give up my favorite strength training class at the gym when I had my surgery last summer. On Tuesday, for the first time in seven months, I went back to that class. During the class, I was proud of how strong I am now, and how quickly my shoulder’s recovered. After the class…well, read above :).

Strangely enough, I kind of love this feeling because I know I worked muscles that haven’t been worked in a long time. Sitting all day at work and letting those muscles get tighter? Not my favorite.

Foodie Holiday + A Fitness Celeb

Did you know that today’s a holiday? Yep, it is, and it’s really important too. Of course, anything that involves food is important. Today is National Peanut Butter Day! I’m pretty sure every food has its own “national” holiday by now, but any excuse to eat an extra spoonful of the good stuff, right?

By the time I got home from the gym, showered and changed, it was after 8pm. I didn’t want to make anything too complicated for dinner (okay, so I never make anything complicated for dinner…but that’s besides the point), so I decided on peanut butter pancakes, in honor of today’s holiday, of course.

These weren’t just any peanut butter pancakes, though. Nope- those were whole wheat peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes…with Nutella drizzled on top. Oh yes I did.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Pancakes

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 cup coconut milk

1 tablespoon natural creamy pb

1 handful choc. chips

approx. 1 teaspoon Nutella (“melted” in microwave for 30 sec.)

Mix the dry ingredients together, then add the milk and peanut butter to the mixture, stirring until smooth. Stir in the chocolate chips, and drop spoonfuls onto skillet, cooking over medium heat. Flip once to cook both sides evenly. Once cooked, drizzle pancakes with Nutella.

Enjoy!

I know I did ;). The pancakes were a little sweeter than I anticipated, and I probably could’ve used a little more protein after my Body Toning class at the gym (it was a tough one), but that’s okay, it is a holiday.

Speaking of tough classes, the queen of tough workouts just happens to be within 15 miles of my hometown this week!

Jillian Michaels is in Indy for the Super Bowl! And that’s model Adriana Lima sitting with her. You know what her caption on that photo was? “Remind me NEVER to take a picture next to a supermodel again!” Really, Jillian? Where’s that self-confidence you so often talked about on ‘The Biggest Loser’?? Oh well, she’s only human. I actually tweeted her to tell her I live in the area, hoping she’d respond. Wishful thinking ;).

Since I don’t have a gym date with Jillian tonight, I must get back to reality and rinse off my peanut butter covered plate and camera case (oops).

A Change of Plans

Bright and early yesterday morning, Jordan and I were supposed to drive to Indy for our first pre-marital counseling session. As part of our preparation for getting married in the church, we are required to see a marriage therapist. I was actually looking forward to it, and had planned to use to today’s blog post to write about how it went, but we had a change of plans.

While that might not look like a lot of snow, underneath it lies a sheet of ice.

Most of the roads weren’t plowed or salted, so we rescheduled our appointment, and yesterday turned into the laziest day I’ve had in months. I loved every minute of it.

Since we were both already up and ready to go at 7:30am, we made the less-than-a-mile trip to Elegance, a restaurant known for its 65 and older crowd. But the secret is, they have really good breakfast.

I had the Mediterranean scramble with home fries, green pepper, feta cheese and egg whites, with pancakes on the side. They are extra generous with their portions, so I tackled about half of that, and then called it a day.

After breakfast, Jordan dropped me off at home so I could get some rest. We didn’t want to travel anywhere else, and I was exhausted from getting up so early.

I did some laundry, took a 2 hour nap, and watched TV in bed.

I kept my lazy theme going when it came time for lunch, eating it in bed, with a side of ‘Bethenny Ever After.’ Since I had a big breakfast, I kept lunch light with a bowl of strawberries, and my new favorite Chobani flavor- blood red orange- with some Grape-Nuts mixed in.

After lunch, bridal magazines were read.

My cousin gave me all of her bridal magazines when we visited a couple of weekends ago, and I’m slowly working through the stack.

Around 5:00pm (sad, I know), I finally rolled myself out of bed for weights and cardio with Jillian Michaels. The rest of the evening was spent eating pizza and watching TV with my family.

Last night, I went to bed so thankful for the change in plans. My body has been craving rest, and I finally got the rest I needed. I don’t know what’s in store for today, but after church, it looks like it might be another relaxing day. And I am not complaining :).

My Leap List

If you watch The Bachelor,  then you probably recall the part of Monday night’s episode when they were discussing leap lists. I must be honest, before that episode, I had never even heard of a leap list. A bucket list, yes, a leap list, no. If I’m not the only one who’s clueless, it’s basically a list of things you want to accomplish before the next big milestone in your life (getting married, having a baby, etc.). Since I happened to watch that show right around the same time I was contemplating my purpose in life ;), it really made me think of my own leap list. What would be on it? What is on it?

The next big milestone in my life is my wedding- less than six months away. Though I could make a list and try to accomplish a ton of goals in half a year, I know I’d only be setting myself up for failure. So, my leap list is going to be a list of things I want to accomplish before 2013. There’s nothing that I feel I absolutely need to do while I’m still single, so I might as well give myself the whole year, right?

My Leap List

1. Become Zumba certified I’ve been taking Zumba for over 3 years now. Unlike running and strength training, it’s the type of exercise that comes naturally to me. Since I danced for many years, it reminds me of that time (I miss dancing…a lot). I’ve been talking about becoming certified for almost a year, and I feel that this year is the year to do it. Once I’m certified, I can begin teaching classes!

2. Buy a house No big deal, right ;)? My experience with apartment shopping and house hunting, thus far, has been frustrating. After realizing that we’re not ready to build a house, Jordan and I looked around at apartments- and I haven’t liked what I’ve seen. I’m really hoping to find a cute starter home in our area for a good price. I’ve learned that we don’t need brand new, we just need functional. Fingers crossed!

3. Run a half marathon Yes, you read that right. Five years ago, I didn’t even know the distance of a half marathon. Two years ago, the thought of running made my head hurt. Today, I feel differently. I’ve done 5Ks, I’ve done a 10K, so what’s a few…or 7…miles more? I don’t plan on running forever, but I’d like to do a 12 week training plan, and accomplish the task one time.

4. Book a honeymoon This may seem like an obvious goal, but as I mentioned earlier, our original honeymoon plans didn’t work out. I plan on explaining in a later post- but here’s a hint- don’t book a trip through WeddingChannel.com! We’re still in the process of getting our money back, and once we do (and I pray that we do), we have to book a new trip. I just want to go somewhere fun and relaxing…and I hope to book it soon.

5. Find a job that I love Right now, I’m working full-time creating content for a website at a company 45 minutes from my house. It’ s been a good first job, and I’m thankful for the experience, but it’s also a temporary position. I know I can’t be (and don’t want to be) a temp forever. Eventually, I’d love to freelance and do something in the health and fitness industry, and possibly work with kids (I know, I’m random), but I’m still not exactly sure what path I need to take to get there. That’s what I’m hoping to figure out this year!

6. Become self-hosted Since I really enjoy blogging, I think I’m ready to take the next step- becoming self-hosted. I’d love to become a part of a bigger blogging network, like BlogHer, and unfortunately, I can’t do that until I accomplish this goal. I plan to make the switch after I’m married, changing the name and theme of my blog to match the new chapter of my life. I am kind of clueless when it comes to self-hosting, so if you have any advice, (please do) email me at perfectionisnthappy at gmail dot com :).

I may or may not add to this list as the months go by, but for right now, here’s to accomplishing goals :).
