Long Distance Love

8 Feb

I haven’t talked to Jordan- at all – in a whopping 2 1/2 days. I’m already going crazy. He’s currently in Germany on a business trip, and I have no idea when I’ll be able to talk to him, if at all, before he comes back- one week from now.

The funny thing is, my relationship with Jordan began from a distance. I was going to college in Indy, and he was at another school, an hour and a half away. In our early stages of dating, we got to know each other over the phone. We didn’t kiss, or even whole hands, until our second month together. Things developed differently than they would have, had we lived closer to each other.

Hanging out at his apartment, nearly 3 years ago- why do we look so young??

In the beginning, we saw each other every couple of weeks- usually just for a Saturday night date. Sometimes, it was torture to wait two or three weeks to see him; sometimes, it was nice to have space. We were both taking a full load of classes, involved in extracurricular activities, and busy with our friends and family. We had other things to focus on besides our growing relationship.

As time went on, we fell in love. A year and a half passed, and Jordan graduated from college.

At that time, he moved back home to begin his career. I, on the other hand, was entering college as a fifth year senior, and still had homework and the pressures of school. The extra time we wished we had when we were apart? It suddenly felt like a burden. How much time were we supposed to spend with each other? Was it okay to stop our nightly phone calls? These were the random things we struggled with.

Eventually, we found a routine that worked for us. I graduated from college and entered the working world too.

Longest day ever-I was exhausted by the time we took that picture

Without homework and the stress of school, we found more time for each other. We still don’t see each other everyday, but we text, go to the gym together, and plan dates for the occasional night out.  No more long drives, no more long phone calls, no more citing “absence makes the heart grow fonder” over and over and over ;).

Except for this week. This week, we’re back to square one. I’m remembering how it feels to be away from him, how it feels to wonder what he’s doing, how it feels to watch our favorite TV shows alone.

I suppose it’s good that I get this week of alone time before we get married. I can watch as many episodes “Gilmore Girls” as I want. I can blog, blog, blog without any questions :). And this weekend, I can sleep in, clean and lounge the day away.

But next week, when Jordan comes home, I will be more than happy to see him, just as I was when I anticipated his arrival on the weekends, three years ago.

Time flies.

Have you ever been in a long distance relationship?

Has your significant other ever traveled overseas without you?

My relationship has been long distance for almost a year and a half of the 2 years we’ve been together. We met right after I’d submitted part one of my application for a semester abroad in London. Other factors, his jobs and my schooling, have kept us apart for even longer. We’re engaged now and when one of my friends asked when I knew he was “the one”, I didn’t have an exact answer. But I just know that if we can survive being separated for so long, then this is it. I don’t know how to date like a normal person anymore! I also have been classically conditioned to react to my phone’s vibration with utter excitement.

My BF and I started out in the same city for the first 3 years, but he just recently moved overseas for grad school (for 4yrs) :(. It is currently the HARDEST THING I’ve ever had to go through…lol.
I really don’t think I’m handling it too well, and am just wondering where life is going to take me…
You’ll be fine 🙂 He put a ring on it!! hehehe

Chris and I are in a long-distance relationship right now. It’s really hard. Especially now that we’re engaged and know that in about a year and a half we’ll be living together. It would be much easier if we didn’t live so far apart (me in MA, him in FL) because we only get to see each other like every 8 weeks. Boo…I miss him haha.

That would be soo hard! Just think though- in a little over a year, you will be married and you’ll get to see him all the time :)!

Awe that is too cute! My ex and I spent a long time in a long distance relationship. It honestly isn’t as hard as people make it out to be (we broke up for completely different reasons) but you are so strong!

When I was a junior in college I went to New Zealand for 5 weeks for study abroad. I got to talk to my boyfriend twice a week if I was lucky. There was only one phone in our living area and around 30 people to use it. I was alright for the first couple of weeks but then I was ready to be back. I knew I would never be good at the long distance thing.

Been there. Done that! D and I were high school sweethearts had to deal with the long distance deal when he entered the Marine Corps. Even after we got married we had many nights apart. But I do agree that absence makes the heart grow fonder…and thank god for cell phones! Hoping you both see each other soon!

I have so much respect for you! I am convinced I would make a terrible military wife- I’m way too anxious for that!

It seems hard now, but it will feel SO good to have him back in a week. I was long distance with my bf for a little less than a year (1 school year) for our first year of dating. We started dating over the summer, then went to school 8 hrs apart. I ended up transferring back home for a few reasons, which worked out great. If I get an internship next year, I’ll be moving a few hours away. It will be weird going from living together to long distance again, but I know we can make it work. That picture of you guys near the water is so cute!

Thank you! And yes, you guys will make it work! My friend was long distance with her bf for a very long time, then they moved in together, then they were long distance again- and it all worked out!

We went through these phases too! Being far apart, close together, and now married! I can totally relate and I’ve learned to find that being together doesn’t mean you have to be doing the same thing. Now that we’re married, we hang out in the same room–chatting and laughing, yet doing different activities–he’ll be surfing the web while I knit but we’re still spending time together!

My ex and I were together 3 years and a lot of that time was long distance. He is 2 years older than I and we started dating when he was a senior in college and I was a sophomore. I was at college for a good amount of the time we dated(he came to see me every single weekend); then I graduated, and moved 2 hours away. We both had different ideas of what we were going to do when I graduated: he wanted to move in together because he saw it as a time where we finally didn’t have to be long distance, and I wanted to take what job offers came my way and see where they took me. We were just in different places in our lives which ultimately led to the break-up. We tried out the LD for a few months, but we had other ongoing issues which simply couldn’t be fixed if we were that far apart.
bottom line: I think LD works when everything else is good in a relationship, but doesn’t if things already need a lot of improvement.

Yeah, long distance is definitely not easy. I think it helped, knowing that eventually we would be living in the same city again. We had our fair share of arguments when I was figuring out my career path though- it’s hard.

I can definitely relate. My husband and I did long-distance the whole time we dated … he was in Ohio and I was in Florida. After he proposed, I moved up a couple of months later. Plus, he travels a lot for work … so I still spend a lot of time alone. Fortunately, he just got a promotion that = no more traveling! Yay! 🙂

(But let’s be honest … sometimes it was nice having nights alone to watch The Bachelor and Gilmore Girls haha!)

Yay, that’ll be nice to have him home! My dad has traveled for work for over a decade, so I know how hard it can be, especially for my mom!
