Fitness Loves of the Week: Planks with a Twist

10 Feb

I’m so happy that it’s Friday, I could sing Rebecca Black! I said “could” ;). This week went by surprisingly fast; I can’t believe it’s already time for my second edition of FLOW!

As of lately, I’ve been getting more and more into body toning/strength training classes and DVDs.  Jillian Michaels is my go-to when I’m at home, but I’ve been trying out some classes at the gym too. I have to say, I’m beginning to like it! A cardio-only routine can get pretty stale, so it’s good for me to throw some weights in the mix- my own bodyweight included!

One of my favorite (and tiring) new moves is the knee bend, or “plank with a knee to elbow twist.” If you’ve done level 2 of Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred, you know what I’m talking about. Jillian, of course, throws the move in at the end of the workout, when you’re already drenched in sweat, ready to fall down and take a nap. Not so fun. But last night, in my Boding Toning class at the gym, we did three (or four? I can’t even remember) sets of “running knee bends” in the middle of class, when I wasn’t as worn out. It was difficult- in a good way.

The exercise targets the abs, obliques, shoulders, arms and back. It’s a total body workout in a few small steps! Check out this helpful tutorial (note: I don’t do the walking across the room part- but if you want to, go for it!):

The next time you workout, try incorporating three 30 second sets into your routine. Go at your own pace, and keep your abs in tight. In no time at all, you’ll get a total body workout. You’ll be feeling it the next day- believe me :).

Have you tried planks with a knee to elbow twist?

What’s your favorite strength move, using your own bodyweight?

I used to have to do so many planks in dance and really haven’t done them since then! I can’t wait to give these a whirl at the gym today. Thanks so much for sharing this cool twist on the exercise!

Never done that version of a plank…I do what I can to avoid any version of a plank haha. They’re so brutal! I’d have to say my favorite bodyweight move is lunges, probably because my legs are a lot stronger than any other part of my body (well, I mean, obviously my legs are stronger than my arms, since there’s a lot more muscle to have there…but relatively speaking, my legs have a lot more endurance than my arms and core. That’s what I was trying to get at haha). My knees do get a little tweaky after too many lunges, but I can do those a lot longer than just about anything.

Haha, I know what you mean. My lower body is much stronger than my upper body, but lunges and squats start to hurt my knees after awhile!
